Returning to the Wisdom of Simple Things

Wild Apothecary at Mahai

One of the things we’ve come to value most at Mahai is creating experiences that reconnect people to simple, grounded ways of caring for themselves.

We're trying to get to the true heart of what healing means. We're trying to share embodied spirituality in a way that is connecting to the spirit of the earth. Not wellness as performance. Not endless products and consumption.

Slower, more intentional relationships with the natural world around us.

That spirit comes alive beautifully in Gabriela Alcántara's Wild Apothecary workshops.

Gathered together near the sea, guests spend an afternoon learning how everyday plants and ingredients can be transformed into nourishing creations for body and home — herbal oils, natural scrubs, healing balms, botanical hair treatments, and simple remedies rooted in traditional knowledge.

There is something deeply calming about working with your hands in this way.

The scent of herbs being crushed and blended.

Honey and flowers and laughter in the air.

Conversations unfolding slowly around the circle.

It is a very grounded way of learning how to practice self care that does not have to come from something purchased or packaged.

Gabylu’s workshops are not about perfection or expertise. They are about a simple inner wisdom. About knowing.

Knowing that many of the tools for nourishment and healing have always existed close to us.

Knowing the quiet satisfaction of making something yourself.

Knowing that wellness can be simple.

At Mahai, these workshops have become more than activities. They are part of the larger rhythm of life here — one that invites people to slow down, reconnect with nature, and rediscover forms of healing that feel personal, tactile, and real.

We are constantly being asked to consume more. If you even think about something you want, there will be ten ads for it on your Facebook feed the next day. There is something powerful about gathering together to create something slowly, intentionally, and by hand. Something you don't have to buy in a plastic bottle.

And by the end of the workshop, people almost always leave carrying more than the remedies themselves.

They leave carrying a different feeling about what it means to care for themselves.

Gabylu has put her Wild Apothecary recipes together in a book that is available by donation. Her other books are available on Amazon to help people of all ages learn how to incorporate herbs into their lives in practical ways.
